The Syracuse Police Athletic/Activities League has announced the Syracuse PAL Literacy League in response to the pressing issue of low literacy proficiency within local school districts. The program is aimed at improving reading and writing skills among youth aged 8 to 12. The Syracuse PAL Literacy League will begin October 16, the program will offer two sessions per week held on Monday and Wednesday, running until November 20.
The Syracuse City School District has been ranked No. 644 out of 661 districts in New York State for English Language Arts proficiency, highlighting the urgent need for effective literacy interventions. The Syracuse PAL Literacy League seeks to address this challenge by pairing an hour of literacy practice with an hour of incentive activities, such as sports, in an attempt to motivate and inspire the young learners.
“We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and literacy is a foundational skill for their future,” said Jimmy Oliver, Syracuse Police Director of Community Engagement “This program not only focuses on improving reading and writing skills but also creates a fun and supportive environment to foster learning.”
The program will take place at 511 South State Street, Syracuse, NY 13202, and youth will receive tailored instruction from trained volunteers and Syracuse University Students. Each session is structured to ensure that the students receive the support they need while also enjoying activities that reinforce learning.
