PRODUCTION
The founder, publisher, and owner of the CNY Latino newspaper is Hugo Acosta. Publishing is relatively a new field for him, since his original majors were Computer Science and Marketing. After creating and running another Central New York business (H.A. Technical Services) since 1991, he adventured to start a Hispanic oriented newspaper. For that he had to learn not only the many features and aspects of the open world of American publishing, and also to use his marketing expertise and techniques for this new product. Therefore, with a limited (personal) budget, a strong cultural dedication, and working out of his home office, while still running the other business, and trying to handle the tasks and chores of a single parent, he started to produce the CNY Latino newspaper
The CNY Latino newspaper is being produced in 3 main phases:
Advertisement arrangement.- All the requested and contracted advertisement orders are evaluated and recorded, processing design and translation (when necessary) is performed, and then approved for posting. Positioning is determined, and placement is made with the help of specialized publishing software. Once all the arrangements are made, invoicing procedures is ordered.
Content acquisition.- Based on the selected "theme of the month", main current news, and other subjects of interest, a comprehensive research is made to obtain available material to provide corresponding content for the edition to be printed. We use subscribed news services for filtered sourcing, and general online search, to obtain topics and articles that are related to what is needed. When necessary, we send for "publishing permission" or purchase rights to publish. When available and possible, pertinent local information is also acquired to compliment with content for the issue to be published.
Editing process.- Content obtained for articles and advertisement is reviewed and checked for grammar, spelling and proper English and Spanish.
Layout design.- At this phase, most of the advertisement placement is determined and done, so the content is to be placed and arranged. Font size and fittings are manipulated to maneuver column spaces and alignments, layout features (lines, column dispositions, negative and positive spaces, etc.) are imposed and/or made, and page-by-page outline is being finalized.
Printing.- The entire edition (individual set of pages) is being printed on high resolution (300 dpi minimum) laser printer, on a special paper that will be physically taken to the web-printing system of Tenney Media Group, who is our main printing service supplier, where between 7,000 and 8,000 copies will be automatically printed, folded, and packaged for street distribution.
Depending on the time, production development, and other issues, the production process might vary and might force additional steps or procedures. In any case we try to assure that the final product is to the highest satisfaction of our readers, and to represent a proud product from our cultural ethnic group.
